    8/18/2022 4:46:59 AM

Recently, The National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT) and the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) have launched the “Amazing Dark Sky in Thailand” project with stargazing locations or dark sky conservation areas spread across Thailand’s regions.

TAT launches the Amazing Dark Sky Thailand programme

Mr. Yuthasak Supasorn, TAT Governor, said “We are promoting astronomy tourism or dark sky tourism as another new tourist experience, that is in line with the ‘Visit Thailand Year 2022-2023: Amazing New Chapters’ campaign. Tourists who are fond of watching the stars, and astronomical phenomena like meteor showers and eclipses when they occur, can do so and combine this with other tourism attractions and activities at different locations around Thailand.”

One of 12 dark sky conservation areas
A dark sky conservation area is an open space where the surrounding sky could be observed freely enough from light pollution, and where prominent celestial objects were visible to the naked eye. There are also personnel in the area able to provide tourists with basic astronomical knowledge, as well as facilities like restrooms, restaurants, and accommodation.

Certified dark sky conservation zones were based on three criteria: ample and well-controlled dark-sky areas, good management of local lighting, and a high-quality observation area where popular stars or constellations can be seen without the need of telescopes or other devices.

A total of 12 places are designated as part of Amazing Dark Sky stargazing tour located in five national parks, one community and six private properties.

The goal of Amazing Dark Sky is to attract more quality tourists and reach the target group through niche marketing by offering valuable experience, promoting astronomy tourism along with recommended travel routes for stargazing tour, as well as raising public awareness about the need to conserve areas with totally dark skies at night that are free from “light pollution”, make the peaceful night skies a tourist attraction itself.
